Quick guide: Install an .APK on Android

Install an .APK file on Android

Quick illustrated guide to install from an external link (unknown sources).
Safety first: only install trusted APKs. Android may block installations for your security. If you doubt the source, do not continue.
Before you begin
1) Stable Wi‑Fi connection · 2) Enough free space · 3) Have the APK link handy.
1
Download the .APK from the link
Tap it from chat/email or paste it in the browser (Chrome recommended).
• Allow the download if the browser asks.
• The file will be in Downloads.
2
Open it and tap Settings on the prompt
When opening the .APK from Chrome/Downloads, Android shows a security prompt.
• You’ll see a box like: “For your security, your phone currently isn’t allowed to install unknown apps from this source. You can change this in Settings.”
• Tap Settings (not Cancel).
3
Turn on Allow from this source
The “Install unknown apps” screen opens for the source app (Chrome, Files, Drive…).
Android 8.0 or higher (most devices): Turn on Allow from this source and go back.
Android 7.1 or earlier: Settings → Security → turn on Unknown sources (global switch).
4
Return to the file and tap Install
Go back to Chrome/Downloads and open the .APK again.
• Tap Install. When it finishes, tap Open or Done.
• If another security prompt appears, proceed only if you trust the source.
5
(Recommended) Turn the permission off after installing
Go back to the same setting and turn off Allow from this source again.
Keep the permission on only as long as needed to install.

If something goes wrong: quick fixes
Common issues and how to solve them.
  • The prompt doesn’t show “Settings”: open Settings → Apps → Special access → Install unknown apps and enable the source app (Chrome/Files/Drive).
  • “Install” button doesn’t appear: a floating app (overlay) might be blocking it. Temporarily disable it.
  • “App not installed”: download the file again, uninstall older versions, and check for enough free space.
  • Blocked by Play Protect: if you trust the source, tap More detailsInstall anyway (if available).
  • Can’t open the .apk: open FilesDownloads and launch it from there.
